What is estate jewelry? It’s any jewelry you own — from fine antique and vintage heirlooms to low-end items made overseas; from gemstones sold on television to diamonds left over from old relationships, yes, even some costume and fashionable "bridge" jewelry . It’s every conceivable kind of jewelry in the hands of an ultimate consumer.
When I opened my consignment shop in 1991, my goal was to provide a full spectrum of services in the estate jewelry field, including appraising and repair. The idea was to curate people's jewelry, really care for it. My dream was to create an organized market in used jewelry. My first concern was for owners, because they face the prospect of selling with such doubt and fear, so they must be educated to understand how the estate jewelry market works. Buyers must be helped, as well, to see the value in a particular piece. This market is more idiosyncratic than the market for new jewelry, therefore it takes a little more effort to appreciate its ways. But it makes sense.
Jewelry Consignment Shop is a consignment shop for estate jewelry. The price for an item is established with the owner before it is accepted for sale, as well as the commission, which is due when it is sold. This price is based on the most likely current wholesale market price for the item, considering its quality, condition, and background. This pricing structure benefits both buyer and seller: it is less than if it were offered in a retail store, but more than the gemstone or jewelry trade (which buys for re-sale) can pay. The aim is to create a marketplace at the borderline of the wholesale and retail estate jewelry markets, serving the region of Oklahoma and contiguous states. There is no listing fee for showing the items, on-line or in person.
Jewelry Consignment Shop protects both buyers and sellers, because all items are vetted to authenticate their quality, condition, background (or "provenance"), and value, as determined by studying sales of similar items. To fulfill the role of professional broker requires knowledge of gemology, the jewelry arts and appraisal science. Each item is held in our secure facility for an agreed consignment term, at a set price and commission percentage, payable to the owner as soon as it is sold.
The purpose of Jewelry Consignment Shop is to return the highest percentage of your jewelry’s value possible. This begins with consultation - a frank discussion of the jewelry, what it is and what it is not, and its position in the marketplace. Is it in hot demand? Is it auction quality? The process also considers your feelings: for instance, do you have the time and desire to find a private buyer on your own? If so, we discuss how to do that. What weight do you give its sentimental value? Should you sell it at all?
How long does selling your jewelry take? The typical consignment period is six to twelve months to find a private buyer. For those who want an item to be sold immediately, Jewelry Consignment Shop can make brokerage sales, usually in less than one week, to estate buyers in the gems and jewelry trades, choosing the buyer who pays the most for the type of item. For this activity, it is important to know who the "last in line" in the dealer trade is, that is, the one in the supply chain closest to the retail trade, who can afford to hold the item in inventory.
If an item can't be marketed intact, as jewelry, due to damage, style or other factor, Jewelry Consignment Shop also offers the liquidation alternative with a one- to two-day turn-around, including very competitive prices paid for scrap gold and other precious metals, by selling direct to refiners.
