Scott Gordon's appraisal career began thirty years ago. He has rendered thousands of written reports of many kinds, including insurance coverage for owners, confirmation of quality and price for prospective buyers, options for liquidation for both individuals and institutions, state and federal estate tax liability for executors and administrators, equitable distribution for heirs, divorce settlement, and civil litigation.

His institutional clients have included the Federal Bureau of Investigation, U.S. Marshal's Office, U.S. Customs, U.S. Secret Service, banks, and law firms. He has appeared as an expert witness in U.S. District Court and Oklahoma County District Court.

The pace of change in the gemological world demands that competent practitioners mount unceasing efforts to keep up with new synthetic materials, which duplicate the chemical and physical properties of natural gemstones, and also with new technologies of gemstone treatment that seek to improve appearance in ways that have grave impact on value.

Scott Gordon meets these challenges not only by assiduous self-study but also through attending trade shows, seminars and conferences that provide continuing formal education to give gemologists the tools they need to protect themselves and their clients.

He constantly monitors and participates in on-line appraisal discussion groups, made up of practitioners all over the United States who regularly face the hardest gems and jewelry appraisal assignments with due diligence.

Scott Gordon keeps a fully equipped gemological laboratory in his office, as well as a portable laboratory that enables him to perform assignments in the field. His color vision has been tested periodically and found to be normal. His library, which includes the most important industry periodicals and pricing guides over the past twenty years and access to trade-only Internet resources for value research, help further his practice of gemstone and jewelry appraising at the highest level.

Charges are as follows: $90 minimum for the first item; $70 minimum for the second, and $50 minimum for each additional. Plot diagrams for diamonds weighing 0.50 carat or more are $45 minimum. Photographs are $15 per image.

The final fee is set when the item or items are inspected and the reason for performing the appraisal (for example, to obtain insurance coverage, to establish tax liability, to report quality and market value for purchase decision, among many others) is made clear.

The fee is based on an estimate of the time necessary to render the assignment with credible results. In some assignments, a project fee is utilized.

This process establishes your actual fee, so that you know what to expect before you decide whether to go forward. If you choose to do so, you will obtain the most accurate, thorough appraisal documentation available in the gems and jewelry field. There is a huge difference between what almost all jewelry stores produce and the best available.
